We currently offer a web-based version of the <a href="https://anope.org/new/faq.php">FAQ</a> and links to documentation for <a href="http://anope.zero.org/docgen/en_us/">users</a> and <a href="http://anope.zero.org/doxy/">developers</a>. Copies of the documentation bundled with anope and other helpful resources will be added later.</p>

+The Anope team starts the new year with the next development release, Anope 1.7.18. Since the previous release, we have been working on the MySQL subsytem to improve stability and security of this code. Next to that, we have added support for encryption modules, finally including support for encrypting passwords with proper MD5 or SHA1.
+
+Next to these two major improvements there are quite a few bugs fixed, including bugs related to module code, internal events, various typo's in the language files, and some IRCd-related issues.
+
+Please note that, due to the big changes, this release might not be as stable as previous development releases. The new MySQL and encryption code have been found stable enough to release to the public, but they might still have undiscovered quirks.
+
+Be sure to check Changes.conf for encryption-related changes to the configuration file. Users of MySQL should also note that the MySQL scheme has been changed in this release and needs to be updated. This can be done using the updates in Changes.mysql.

+As the latest 1.7.x releases are the build up to 1.8-stable, we are aware that some Networks are already helping us by running these, but we'd like to go out on the limb a bit more and ask for some networks to run 1.7.xx-svn which will incorporate the latest bugfixes in our efforts to reach the dizzy heights of 1.8-stable.

+As the times become nearer, we will be releasing a public 1.8-RC1 but we'd like you guys to get involved earlier and help us make this RC1 a single RC and allow us together to get on moving past 1.8 onto some of the juicier feature requests we've had since we entered our feature freeze.

+Unfortunately, we encountered some problems with the way in which Chanserv & Nickserv are storing passwords which has led us to make a sad but needed decision to break the long time standing backwards database compatibility with versions prior to this one. - This means that once you have upgraded to 1.7.23 (or any SVN build after revision 1462) you will be unable to go back.

+Please make sure you take a back up prior to upgrading just in case you do need to revert!

+It is crucially important that if you use MySQL with UseRDB that you for the first time running 1.7.24 disable UseRDB, start up anope from Flatfile DBs and perform an /OS UPDATE to dump the data into your MySQL Database before shutting down and enabling UseRDB.

+This is due to a change in the way passwords are stored in MySQL and therefore we are keen to hear from users if you run into any problems and cannot recommend strongly enough that you take a back up prior to upgrading!

+Today is an exciting day … (Ok, it's 2 days to my birthday but that's not what I'm talking about!).

+We've been in talks with the Denora Stats team and are proud to announce that Denora will merge their knowledge and features back into Anope 1.9 as an optional Statserv module. This we feel collectively will give our users the

+best of both worlds, a second to none IRC Services platform combined with a feature rich and ever evolving Statistics package.
+
+A bit of history will show that Denora forked our base core back in the early 1.7 releases and built upon it, improving and growing their own ideas and functions in whilst allowing us to backport some changes back into our own
+<br/>
+core but with the plans for Anope 1.9 to be as open and architectually flexible as possible we figured it would make sense to hit the ground running!
+
+In the future, we will be looking for competent module authors with popular modules to maintain them whilst we bundle them with the actual product as an optional convenience for users with the eventual idea that some of the modules may either be merged into the core, or that the module author extends their skills and joins our team and developing the product overall.
+
+We are always looking for people who want to help out, even if you don't think you have anything useful to offer, feel free to get hold of me on irc or via email (chaz@anope.org) and we'll see how we can work together.

+<strong>.</strong> The fast paced development of 1.9 as a result of an initial forking effort "Next Generation -ng" brought back into the team to better collaborate and develop.

+We'd like to announce that we've recently migrated our support network (irc.anope.org) over onto InspIRCd 1.2 and have started to use our own new development builds (1.9.0) from SVN.
+
+Many people have asked us why we made this move both to InspIRCd and indeed why we'd leave the comfort of a stable release to use development (potentially unstable) versions and I have answers for you.
+
+We chose InspIRCd as it's a well maintained, highly motivated and definitely innovative product and we (Anope) should be are the forefront of the technology for the sake of our users. (Ok, and our own selfish lust to play with new shiny things!)
+
+We decided also to make the move from Anope 1.8 to 1.9 for a few reasons, namely to put our money where our mouth is and start to push the game forward by showing it's developing fast and taking strides forward. We also wanted to be able to have users experience it for themselves without the need for a testnet or taking the plunge until their ready.
+
+Finally we figured that if we use Anope 1.9 with InspIRCd we'd be helping both teams find/fix bugs as we are all in the same game at the end of the day; to provide reliable, and feature packed IRC 'Services' to administrators & users alike.
+
+There is no political motive to our move; we merely want to further the compatibility efforts with InspIRCd and with the news of the Unreal project forking InspIRCd for their next major version we might aswell get in on the ground with InspIRCd.
+
+In other news, we're aiming for a release of Anope 1.9.0 as the first milestone in the development since it started it's development over on C++ and we'd like everyone to get involved with us in testing and suggesting new features on the forum <a href="https://forum.anope.org/index.php?board=9.0">here</a> and reporting any bugs to us on the Bugtracker <a href="https://bugs.anope.org">here</a><br/>

+We have recently introduced an LDAP backend for Anope. The purpose of this was to allow a single account to be used across the Forums, Bugzilla, & Wiki along with any new services we may offer in the future.

+We have taken the databases from the Forum and Bugtracker and merged them together as best we could in order to import the most amount of unique entries into the LDAP system.
+
+All users must reset their passwords via the following link in order to allow logins to function again across all services.
+

+Anope needs you. - Well, it needs motivated people with time and energy to dedicate to furthering the development and stability of the product and it's ever growing community.

+<b>What kind of people does your community need?</b>
+
+It needs <b>all</b> kinds of people!
+
+People doesn't necessarily mean you need to know how to write C/C++, or even know Anope inside out and back to front it just means you enjoy using the product and want to help further its use and refinement within an ever evolving community.
+
+Your community needs people that want to sit on irc helping other people learn how irc functions, it needs people who spend time on forums again helping people out, and it really needs people to read through the documentation & language translation files, update the old stuff and make it pleasing and acceptable to everyone.
+
+Your community needs network administrators that use the software to absolute destruction and can feed back on bugs, and help us test pre-release material before it's generally available elsewhere. It's absolutely crucial we build a nice big group of people who want to help test and feed back information/bugs on both the stable and devel branches.
+
+Of course your community also needs people who can code, people who can look at the existing codebase, make suggestions and contribute for improvements and get stuck in working with our team and the community in helping develop the product you want.
+
+We're working on lots of community orientated features behind the scenes; a new feature packed Modules Repository linking back to our LDAP System is top of the requests list and we need people with ideas and PHP knowledge to help us make this work as best as possible.

+Almost 6 months to the day since we released a patched build of 1.9.0 (aptly named 1.9.0-p1) and as time has gone on more and more has been achieved from what is proving to be a fast paced development cycle. (I know many people will be pleased to hear that).

+* Fantasy Commands - We know how much people love our very own Viper's bs_fantasy_ext module and how troubled you all were when it wasn't available for 1.9.x well now you don't even need it, the majority and some more functionality have been put into Chanserv directly, give it a go, tell us if we've missed anything!

+* Opertypes - We've listened and responded to people wanting to provide granular access to commands on their own terms, not being stuck to fixed roles as previously so starting with 1.9.1 you will be able to declare your own oper types, assign them specific or blanket permissions and even allow non-opers to use commands on all pseudo clients EXCEPT Operserv (OSOpersOnly enabled by default) which many people wanted to do by allowing help operators perform some tasks that previously only a services oper (and in turn an irc operator) could only do.

+As Christmas draws nearer and the time to develop shortens (in lieu of the increased time spent drinking and socialising with the family) we're once again looking out to the community to help make a difference.

+From the bottom of our hearts we'd like to pass on our very best regards to everyone, their families, friends, and even their enemies as well as sparing a thought for those who cannot be with their families today for whatever reason.
+
+It's been a very productive year for Anope and the community it serves:
+
+<strong>.</strong> 4 Development Releases driving development further forward at a rapid pace.
+
+<strong>.</strong> Stable Release of 1.8.0 and two further point releases.
+
+<strong>.</strong> Celebrated the release of InspIRCd 1.2 and introduced support into both branches of Anope for this as a forward thinking and barrier breaking IRCd development team.
+
+<strong>.</strong> Introduced an LDAP Directory Backend to the Anope Web Platform to allow for easy access to all of our offered services with a single set of credentials and privileges on 3rd party systems granted based upon directory grouping.
+
+<strong>.</strong> Modules Site v2 launched introducing LDAP Support and improved usability for all users.
+
+
+A successful year I'm sure all will agree but we're not done yet; with new team members joining us since last year we will continue to develop and support a solution widely regarded as "what's used" when people consider systems to develop their IRC Network. Our two branches will continue to offer stability for those with existing userbases used to the featureset at heart whilst the development branch will continue to innovate offerings from a services perspective and ultimately introduce new database flexibility, Denora Stats integration amongst the code refresh.
+
+We as always are very grateful to our users who use the software, drop in to the channel for a chat and especially those who help us make the product better by reporting issues, suggesting changes & even implementing the changes themselves and passing us a patch. Not everyone can write software, people are always needed for many other roles including but not limited to:

+. Testing bugs reported on the bugtracker and seeing whether you can reproduce them.

+. Updating the language translation files to ensure they are accurate & up to date for your language.

+6 months since the last stable branch update, we are pleased to announce the immediate availability of Anope 1.8.3.
+
+This release brings to the table several bug fixes and official support for InspIRCd 1.2.
+
+We have also taken the decision to move to Visual Studio 2008 for our precompiled Windows versions. This means that if you do not already have 2008 Runtimes you will need those but as several module authors have already moved to this version you may already have them.
+
+You can download them from <a href="https://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=9b2da534-3e03-4391-8a4d-074b9f2bc1bf&displaylang=en">here</a>.
+
+As with all of our releases we would recommend you take a known good back up and perform testing in a testnet environment with your current databases and modules before considering upgrading your live network. +In a fairly unusual move for us I'd like to dedicate this release to Adam as not only is he a development machine but he's a genuinely nice guy and we're very grateful for the time and effort he puts into the project. If anyone in the real world is looking for a young developer with an incredibly bright future get in touch; he's definitely worth your time.
+
+On the roadmap for the near future we're in the middle of rewriting the socket system for 1.9.2, and having just introduced a SQL Interface which whilst not being "live SQL" as most will think this provides a sensible and easy to use commands table which Anope will process at intervals so you can in theory do anything via SQL that you could do from an IRC client and yes, this will open the doors to web system integration etc and we've provided a small php page to demonstrate this. (Usual warnings that trunk will probably eat your breakfast and make fun of your wife. Hint, do not use it in a production environment.)

+It's busy times here and what with our friends over at InspIRCd working on 2.0 and 2.1 of their software we are predicting quite a productive year for IRC as a whole and that's something I'm sure we're all excited about and glad to hear. Onwards and upwards.

+This release brings a number of improvements since 1.9.1-p1, major highlights such as:

+Removed binary databases in favour of flat file plaintext ones.

+Chanserv persist to keep services bots in channels when channel is empty.

+Ability for anope to reconnect if the connection to the uplink dies.

+Live updating SQL and ability to execute commands through SQL which are reflected by Anope in its own databases. +This will be further developed/re-engineered in 1.9.3 but it's a good start.

We have been running 1.9.2 on Teranova for some time now and only uncovered a few unseen bugs. (This was on both Unreal and subsequently our migration to InspIRCd 1.2).

+In order to convert your databases to the new 1.9.2+ format you must run the db-converter executable which will generate anope.db
+
+To compile MySQL support in this version you will require mysql++ and to copy the modules from modules/sql to modules in the anope source.
+
+We are developing a php web solution which will feature shortly allowing users to modify their own details from your website. We welcome suggestions on our forum for functionality this could include.

+Another year is ending and once more we'd like to pass on our very best wishes to everyone, families, friends and even their enemies as well as sparing a thought for those departed who could not be with their families.
+
+I was directed to a story yesterday that touched my heart and I'd like to share it with you all... <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-12043294">a real Good Samaritan (news.bbc.co.uk link)</a>. Personally I've lost (& gained) quite a lot this year, experiences & lessons that will stand me in good stead to pass on to those who need them and I'm confident that as everyone moves around their lives at this time of year if we all do a good deed it can help make the world a better place.
+
+2010 for Anope was a productive year, some highlights:
+
+* 3 stable branch releases keeping the bugfixes going and adding InspIRCd 2.0 stable to the supported list.
+
+* 4 development branch releases (incl. patch level releases) bringing in a new database system, IPv6 link support, SSL link support, improved MySQL implementation, increased encryption(multiple) compatibility, DNS blacklist system (with threads), amongst others. You really should check it out if you haven't yet, it's rather impressive and is getting there.
+
+* Automagic module compilation for Windows users when we make stable releases any modules on the modsite will be compiled automatically and made available for you guys. We find this has helped module authors who may not have the time to provide compiled dll's for every release, why not do it for them with automation :)
+
+* Moved to the git distributed version control system to give users & developers more flexibility.
+
+* Rizon IRC Network continues to use a modified version of Anope to serve their users.
+
+* SorceryNet has picked up a modified version of Anope to suit their requirements and uses this from 2010.
+
+* The community spirit is increasing and lots of people have offered their help to beta test, this is fantastic.
+
+A great year once again and we're very grateful to the determination and sheer drive shown by the guys writing the code and the users thrashing it out and reporting bugs and feature improvements. We're not sitting on our laurels though, there's a lot more to be done yet and 2011 looks to be a promising year.
+
+We always welcome people to pop in to irc.anope.org #anope for a chat about their use of the product with the view of making it better (no, that doesn't include how to use raw!) and it's your input that helps drive and shape the direction of the product moving forward. Not everyone can write the code for the software but this should not let it stop you contributing..

+The Anope Team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Anope 1.8.5 (Stable) which introduces InspIRCd 2.0 support and refines the support of earlier versions.
+
+Other noteable changes include:
+
+* Support for building on MS Visual Studio 2010 (we still build the binary releases on VS2008)
+
+* Improved logging facilities.
+
+* Optional mail forking (for non Windows OS)
+
+* Many many bug fixes (encourage all users to upgrade once tested)
+
+As always we encourage all users of the stable branch to upgrade to the latest version when they are able to. Of course as per normal procedure you should run this on your testnet with your modules & databases before going live.
+
+Finally, I write with some disappointment at the poor show of people willing to test this release. .
+
+Too few people were willing to help us test this release which has delayed things considerably even to the point where I wasn't going to bother until people actually did take part. I then decided this was unfair to those who did bother and to that end here it is.
+
+My thanks as always go to the folks who did bother; you guys know who you are and we're grateful for your continued support.
+

+Hi all,
+
+We believe we're ready to release Anope IRC Services 1.8.6 as our next stable release.
+
+Before we do this though we'd like to involve the community in testing our pre build just to make sure everything is OK and contribute back to the project with your findings.
+
+We'll leave this open for a week with a view of releasing next weekend if all is OK.
+
+There will be no other commits to stable in the meantime unless issues are found in these builds.

+The Anope Team are pleased to announce the release of two development builds.
+
+Firstly, 1.9.3-p1 which is a patch release of 1.9.3 with fixes/etc for that particular branch and then a release of 1.9.4 which has the fixes from 1.9.3-p1 where appropriate together with heaps more development on top.
+
+Admins running 1.9.3 at the moment have two choices, update to 1.9.3-p1 as a small upgrade to improve the stability of 1.9.3 (but it's still dev!), or upgrade to 1.9.4 which carries larger risks as this branch has received much more development but has lots more new shiny features for you to play with.
+
+We make these releases available to you to help find issues and improve the stability whilst we continue to drive the direction of development forward.
+
+We welcome admins to try these releases and find bugs and suggest improvements but please be aware that these are not to be considered stable so do not complain if they crash and burn or eat your dinner.
+
+We continue to make great progress on the development of Anope and once again I take my hat off to the team and especially to Adam for the time and effort he puts into this product. He is clearly a master of the <a href="https://xkcd.com/320/">28 hour day</a>.

+The Anope Team are proud to announce the release of Anope 1.9.5. This release continues the development of our development branch in creating the next generation Anope 2.0 stable.
+
+The configuration has been split up in to multiple separate files, so any admins switching from older 1.9 versions may want to completely redo their configuration file (and enjoy the new options!).
+
+Some of the notable changes include:

+Added os_oper, os_kill, os_forbid, m_statusupdate, cs_sync, and bs_autoassign
+<br/>
+Added a new configuration file format
+<br/>
+Added a new commands system
+<br/>

+Additionally, we have taken the time to patch the previous 1.9.4 release and are releasing it as 1.9.4-p1, for those who prefer to stay on the more stable side of 1.9 development.

+Last, but not least, our project leader chaz has stepped down after leading the Anope Team for almost three years to attend to real life. Chaz was instrumental in late 1.7 development and releasing 1.8 stable, as well as kick starting 1.9 development off to its bright future. We thank him greatly for the time he has put in to Anope to make it better and we wish him the best of luck in life. DukePyrolator has stepped up from his role as a developer to fill the open position of project leader.

+The Anope Team are proud to announce the release of Anope 1.9.7. This release continues the development of our development branch in creating the next generation Anope 2.0 stable.

+Some of the highlights include:

+ Added regex support for many commands, such as akill, sqline, snline,
+<br/>
+ and all of the */list commands.
+
+ Extended the ability of akill to match against a full nick!user@host and
+<br/>
+ real name of users.
+
+ Added nickserv:registration configuration option to configure how new accounts are verified.
+<br/>
+ Added nickserv:unregistered_notice configuration option to send a custom message to unregistered users on connect.
+
+ Added chanserv:require configuration option to set which modes must be on all registered channels.
+<br/>
+
+<br/>
+ Added options:casemap configuration option to choose how case insensitive strings are compared, using ASCII, rfc1459, or a locale installed on the system.
+<br/>
+
+ db_sql_live now makes <b>all</b> SQL tables "live", not just a select few.
+
+ Added modules m_httpd and webcpanel, which provides a web based control panel for users to register, control settings on their nicknames, channels, and memos.

+Today we are announcing the release of Anope 1.8.9, which includes minor bug fixes and support for Hybrid 8.1.
+
+With the release of Anope 2 later this month, Anope 1 will be officially moved to "Legacy" status and we will no longer be recommending users use it.

+As such, this will be the last release of the Anope 1 branch.
+
+However we will continue to support users running Anope 1.8.x until at least March 23, 2015, at which point we will reevaluate the situation.

+We are proud to announce that after five years of development our latest stable release, Anope 2.0, is now available for download.
+
+With this release we are deprecating the 1.8 branch and no longer recommend users use it.
+
+<b>Overview of changes from 1.8 to 2.0:</b>
+
+Use an account style system instead of the old NSNickTracking option, which allows you to stay logged in no matter what nick you are on.
+<br/>
+Fantasy support for all commands.
+<br/>
+Can assign core pseudo clients (such as ChanServ) to channels.
+<br/>
+A built in web panel.
+<br/>
+Persistent channels, which allows services bots to stay in empty channels.
+<br/>
+Channel passwords replaced with founder level access (QOP, or the FOUNDER access level).
+<br/>
+OWNER access levels added, defaults to access level 9999.
+<br/>
+The option to use a flags based channel access system.
+<br/>
+Ability to authenticate via SSL certificates
+<br/>
+Autojoin channels on authentication (ns_ajoin)
+<br/>
+Significantly more advanced logging system, choose what is logged and where it is logged.
+<br/>
+Support for other optional database backends, such as SQL and Redis.
+<br/>
+Granular command configuration. Configure which command is on what service, what it's called, and who can use it.
+<br/>
+Configurable opertypes, which allows defining new services operator levels (Root, Admin, Oper, etc.) and what permissions each has.

+<b>Installation instructions for Linux/UNIX:</b>
+
+Anope 2 requires CMake to be built. On most systems you can simply install the package from your package manager, eg. sudo apt-get install cmake or sudo yum install cmake.
+
+First, enable any extra modules you want by executing the 'extras' script. Extra modules generally depend on other libraries, such as MySQL, and are not enabled by default due to their dependencies. Then run:
+
+./Config

+<br/>
+make install
+
+<b>Upgrading instructions:</b>
+
+1) Install Anope 2 to a separate directory from your old install (such as ~/services2)
+
+2) Copy 1.8's databases to the 'data' directory of your new install.
+
+3) Configure services, the configuration files are located in the 'conf' directory.
+
+ Anope 2 uses a different configuration file format from 1.8, you will have to reconfigure them completely.
+<br/>
+ Use your old configuration as a reference.
+
+4) While configuring, be sure to load db_old, which loads the old 1.8.x databases, and db_flatfile, which writes out the new Anope 2 database.
+<br/>
+ Ensure that the hash method in db_old's configuration block is the same encryption method that you are currently using on 1.8.
+<br/>
+ Load the correct encryption module, which is the same one configured in db_old.
+
+5) Start services. Once you confirm your database has been successfully imported, comment or remove db_old from the configuration file, so that the next time services restart, they will load the newer database.
+
+

+Third party modules, such as most of the ones found on on the <a href="https://modules.anope.org">Modsite</a>, that are written for 1.7.x or 1.8.x
+<br/>
+will not work with Anope 2. However, many of the features of the most popular 1.8 modules have been included in the Anope 2 release, so you may find you no longer need your extra modules. If it is unclear to you whether or not a given feature is in Anope 2, come ask us.
